Councils & communities · iwi and Māori organisations

Iwi and Māori organisations building their own partnerships in China.

We support iwi, hapū and Māori organisations to build direct relationships in China, on your own terms. Our role is to support, not to lead.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our work

We acknowledge Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the foundation of the relationship between Māori and the Crown in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In our work, that means iwi and hapū decide their own international relationships. Our role is to support, not to lead. We work with tikanga at the centre, and we make sure the benefits come back to the people.

What we can help with

  • Building direct iwi-to-city and iwi-to-institution relationships in China, rather than joining someone else’s programme
  • Preparing for and hosting delegations, with protocol and tikanga at the centre
  • Education links, including kura and school travel – see School and kura travel
  • Cultural tourism developed by Māori, for Māori benefit – see our work with Kutarere and Whakatōhea below
  • Trade and showcase opportunities where they fit your priorities – see Selling to China
  • Checking partners and approaches before you commit – see Services and prices

Work we can point to

We have worked alongside Whakatōhea communities in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, including the Kutarere cultural tourism work with local marae and Te Ūpokorehe. We do not speak for iwi, and we only name partners where they have agreed to be named.

Councils and iwi pay our named community rate of $55 + GST an hour. Fixed-price work is quoted in writing before we start. See services and prices

Tell us what your iwi or organisation is considering. We will be plain about what we can and cannot do, and there is no obligation.
